Things to read​

  • In the past few weeks, Coinbase has lost both Balaji Srivinasan (CTO) and Asiff Hirji (COO). Something must be brewing at the largest crypto exchange in the US. Emilie Choi who was brought on to lead M&A for the firm in 2018 has been slowly rising through the ranks during this shifted period. Most recently, she led the firm’s international business, M&A, and venture. She was just appointed as COO. The Block released a podcast with Emilie Choi.

  • Joe Lubin and Jimmy Song formalized a long-standing bet around future Ethereum DApp usage. Song, a vocal critic of Ethereum and the DApp model, bet that there would not be at least 5 DApps with 10k daily active users (DAUs) by 2023. Alex Wearn, Co-Founder and & CEO of IDEX, one of the most successful DApp, shares some thoughts on relevant metrics to measure DApp usage and potential outcome of the bet.

  • Experimentation in Decentralized Autonomous Organisations (DAOs) is starting to heat up. A spectrum of new governance and coordination ideas are now being put to the test, each with the goal of reinventing the firm. Jesse Walden, an investor at a16z crypto, tweets about interesting crypto governance ideas.

  • Hans Hauge, senior quant researcher at Ikigai, released a framework for quantifying demand of bitcoin using new metrics Binary Adjusted Bitcoin Days Destroyed, Value of Coin Days Destroyed (VOCD) and Reserve Risk. TL;DR for non-quants: metrics indicate that the market bottom is behind us.

Come meet with us to discuss the future of blockchain technology as it relates to the legal field. At this meetup we will talk about how we can make blockchain-based assets legally sound as this token economy emerges. We will also talk about our work with OpenLaw. OpenLaw is a blockchain-based protocol for the creation and execution of legal agreements. Using OpenLaw, lawyers can more efficiently engage in transactional work and digitally sign and store legal agreements in a highly secure manner, all while leveraging next-generation blockchain-based smart contracts.

Matthew Dixon - Blockchain Analytics for Intraday Financial Risk Modeling ($25)

In this talk, we demonstrate the impact of extreme transaction graph activity on the intraday volatility of the Bitcoin prices series. Specifically, we introduce and characterize certain sub-graphs ('chainlets') that exhibit predictive influence on Bitcoin price and volatility and identify the types of chainlets that signify extreme losses. Using bars ranging from 15 minutes up to a day, we fit eGARCH models with and without the extreme chainlets and show that the former exhibit superior Value-at-Risk backtesting performance.

Blockchains4Hacks (Free)

Blockchains4Hacks (B4H) is a hackathon designed to bring blockchain education and awareness to the high school and college level! This hackathon will be open to high schoolers and college students in the NYC area and will be on 6/15. We will have approximately 150-200 students participating in the hackathon.
